As a weekly traveller abroad, I would only suggest you goto the Post Office to get the best rates.

I would not suggest buying currency at the airport as rates are always poorer, you will also be offered a thing called 'buy back', if you buy at the airport, I would not recommend this and watch out as they will always try and sell you more currency then you want.

Shop around! I used to work for in Foreign Exchange and found M&S to have the best rates. However competition is fierce and most agents will match - so if you acn be bothered with a bit if legwork, you coudl save a packet!

It's worth looking in to the American Express Travellers Cheque card as well. I was in New York last year and found this a tremendous product. The safety of Traveller's Cheques with the convenience of a credit card. It's accepted everywhere and you can use it at ATMs!

Personally I wouldn't bother getting any currency even with the good rate of exchange at the momment. I would pay using my debit card, although you will pay a small fee for doing so, it will be better than changing unused US Dollars back into British Pounds when you return home, as you will get considerably less for your money. I am visiting Washington next week and will be using my debit card for everything.

I would use my credit card for big purchses as you get a better excahnge rate with zero commission when paying by card.

Money wise I'm afraid it's the travel agents (online maybe better) for a good deal, saver to get travellers cheques as most places in New York will accept them and give you dollars back as change.

Open a Nationwide bank account. They don't charge for taking your money out and the exchange rate is very good.
