BEHAVIOR
Social:The Cotton-top tamarin will live in a group of 10-12 individuals in the wild. A large portion of their activity time is spent foraging for animal prey, searching through clumps of dead and fresh leaves and along branches and peering and reaching into holes and crevices in branches and tree trunks. Cotton-tops sleep in bushy vegetation.
Activity Time:Diurnal
Reproduction:The estrous cycle is about 15 days. Most captive and wild groups appear to be monogamous, with only one reproductively active male and female; however, exceptions to this trend have been found in wild populations. Interestingly, only one female gives birth to infants, while the other adult females in the group are reproductively suppressed. In captivity, females can give birth to twins every 28 weeks, while infants are born once a year in the wild. Newborns have a coat of short hair and are helpless weighing only 40-50 g. Everyone in the cotton-top family takes care of the infants. Fathers, brothers, and sisters all carry infants on their back. At about 21 days of age, the young start exploring nearby surroundings, but they continue to ride on the backs of the parents until they are about six to seven weeks old. At four weeks, they begin to accept soft food in addition to their mother’s milk. Sexual maturity is attained at about 18 months in females and 24 months in males.

GESTATION
Gestation Period:140Days

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Ways To Help:An education program, “Proyecto Tití,” which uses the cotton-top tamarin as the flagship species for conservation in Colombia, encompasses programs for all ages. The Houston Zoo supports the Cotton-top tamarin SSP. Do not have a primate as a pet; write your legislature and keep informed on laws concerning the environment; be an informed consumer.
