You know that annoying feeling like your back is in a twist and you can make it crack by turning around? But you can't make it crack? I have that right now for the past 4 days. And it's bugging me. It's mostly on my lower back. I'd like to blame my bed, but I've had it for 3 years now.

I'm not sure of a cure, but I have a remedy. Have you ever heard of "utu"? Ask at a pharmacy for it and get someone to rub it in the problem areas of your back. It works like a charm! Also don't strain your back at all, it will make it worse and keep stretching.

It is completely possible for the problem to be your bed, even if it's only three years old. Sometimes we buy mattresses based on their price rather than their wear. Also, if it's not supported by a good foundation and frame, it can sag which will cause your back to hurt, especially if you sleep on your stomach.

A few other things that you may want to consider: If you're on your feet for long periods of time, it could be that your footwear in insufficient. You should wear shoes that have good arch support and thick insole padding inside them. Also, it's important that the shoe flexes when and where your foot does while walking.

The other problem may be your posture, especially if you are sitting for long periods of time. Sit up straight with your lower back supported, use a pillow if necessary. Don't sit with your shoulders slumped, each one should be right under your ears not in front of them.

Some light stretching, in the morning and at night may help relieve the short term discomfort. Also, Alleve or Advil seems to work very well if it feels like a bone issue. I'm a big fan of non-med treatment, so if it feels like a muscle thing, you might want to try a rub called Tiger Balm. There's regular strength (white) and extra (red). Remember, always test a new rub on a small spot of your skin first to make sure you don't have a reaction to it. If it hasn't gone away in ten days or so, I'd suggest that you see a doctor.

Forget the chiro. Go see your doctor. If you've had this pain for more than five days, it could be something more. If it is inflammation, you need anti-inflammatories. Usually he will send you for ex-rays to make sure nothing is off with your spine. If the pain persists, he will send you for a cat-scan. Back problems are the most common and difficult to diagnose. It could be degenerative or hereditary problems. But let's not get carried away. It could have been brought on by something strenuous just days prior which hopefully means it is nothing serious. First things first, go see your doctor. It might also be your mattress.

You might want to check out a chiropractor, I've never been, but know several that goes, and swear by it. Years of wear and tear work on you lower back. If I'd know I was going to live this long, I sure would have taken better care of myself when I was young...Lotsa Luck...
