In a way. Arts are a luxury to societies who have handled their essentials needs (food, water, security, government).
I suppose a purely scientific society could function without any regard to art or "pure" creativity. But, it is unlikely. Art happens since people have an innate desire to express themselves.

No, but appreciation of the arts must sometimes be taught. The greatest of arts, however, such as a great painting or symphony, are at once full of visceral impact. Art captures and explores what it means to be human. i don't see how you can call this endeavor "pointless.' As Goethe said, "One ought, each day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture and, if possible, speak a few reasonable words."

They could be considered a luxury venere upon society, certainly the ability for people to make a living from them is a luxury. However that does not in any way make them pointless.
They help develop our culture and our society.
