After living in Madrid for a year, I have to vote for Spain. Madrid has a wealth of medieval history, and Toledo which is only 40 minutes away on Renfe train is fabulous. In Madrid you can visit the Royal Palace built in the 1700's, and I would also recommend the museum of decorative arts, which begins with Spanish life in the 1500's and each floor covers another century. Madrid is also less expensive than some other parts of Europe.

Hmm, truly medieval places are rare to find. There are some areas in France and Belgium where you can find that, but nice towns are usually a bit 'younger' than medieval towns. You could try Bruges in Belgium, which is a very beautiful town with a medieval centre. If you expand your view and lower the demands on medieval, I'd recommend Amsterdam (nice 17th century houses and lots of other things to do), or Lyon in France (same story, and also some other eras to visit there, Roman times for instance). The Dordogne in France is famous for its medieval scenery and castles and stuff.

Visby on the Swedish island Gotland situated in the Baltic sea is fantastic. Better be tried in the spring or summer though.
"Visby is the largest city on the Swedish island of Gotland;it is arguably the best-preserved medieval town in Scandinavia, and has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of its history, the most notable objects are the 3.4-km long stone wall called "Ringmuren" that encircles the city, and the old church ruins. The name "Visby" comes from the Old Norse Vi, meaning sacrificial place."

In the summer there's a medieval festival:

Or if you prefer the mainland and a big city instead of a windy but beautiful island in the middle of the ocean, try old town, Stockholm.

Another favourite is Strasbourg, France:
