If you go to John Lewis (if you live in the uk!) they have a department that has everything like this in it - I buy iron descaler from them!
Or I just rub the iron on the side of the ironing board until it comes off!!

I never heard about the stain remover you are talking about but you can buy some sos pads at the grocery store and scrub the iron and rinse off and your iron should be fine. Depending on how bad it is, one can also try other scrubbing pads as it will not hurt the iron.

Not sure what that's called but I got an iron cleaning stick (looks like a dried banana) from the Kleeneze catalogue and it does a good job.

The best thing for that is wire wool, just rub it off with that, or try white spirit but only when the iron is cold.

If it is an aluminium bottom use a pan scrub very gently.
Not sure whether you can do the same on a chromed bottom!

I use a nylon scouring pad (it doesn't scratch) with warm soapy water.
