The Monterey Peninsula, where Carmel, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, and Monterey lie, is about 123 miles or so from SF and Oakland. Driving time depends on route and time of day. On hwy 101, it can take from 1:45 to 2:30 hours and minutes; the longer time is during rush hour, which runs from about 3 PM through 7 PM during workdays.
Hwy 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, is way more enjoyable, but it will take you about twice as long to drive because it is winding, undivided highway much of the way. On the other hand, what a view!!!!! And there are plenty of restaurants, beach towns, and sights to stop for and enjoy. So if you have the time, this is the way to go for touristing.
By the way, while in Carmel, have high tea at the Patisserie, their eclairs and rhum babas are to die for. The Pat. is just off Ocean, the main street in Carmel.

The drive on Highway 1 going south from San Francisco to Carmel is spectacular...lots of uncrowded beaches, great restaurants, and lovely wineries.

Santa Cruz is lots from purely a "hippie haven for the homeless." despite the fact that, while you're searching for for coastal atmosphere, Monterey and factors south is very beautiful. element Lobos State Reserve, merely south of Carmel, is tremendously outstanding. notice that it will be a 2-hour stress each and each path.
