SAP is the largest European software enterprise, with headquarters in Walldorf, Germany. SAP was founded in 1972 as Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung by five former IBM engineers in Mannheim, Germany. The acronym was later changed to stand for Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung ("Systems, Applications And Products in Data Processing") and since the 2005 annual general meeting the company's official name is just SAP AG. Henning Kagermann became the sole CEO of SAP in 2003

SAP is an Enterprise Resource Planning Package which in an environment for managing for the complete resources within an organisation.
There are lot of variations of SAP and each package is a customized solution for the particular organization. It can be used in different verticals such as Manufacturing, Retails, Insurance, etc.
It is integrated with every aspect of the company, for example for a manufacturing company, it will keep records of amount of raw material in use, in store and required. It will have details of all manufacturing processes and help to optimize processes, manage inventory of finished products, give estimate future requirement of raw material and sales. It will help managers decide the right product mix by giving expected demand for the product.
In short, SAP helps to provide complete solution to your business process.
However, it must be noted that it is not a panacea to all the problems, but is useful only if it used effectively by the people who operate it. It is only a tool to help make decisions, not a decision-maker by itself.
