I unknowningly downloaded an internet dialup software that takes over my modem and dialed out to 1-900 and racked up my phone bill. Does anyone know if the software uses the dialogue box to dial out or does it bypass it altogether? I know that I can prevent it by unplugging my phone line but it sure is a pain to do this all the time.

It bypasses DUN completely. Install a spyware package on your machine and run a full scan. Spybot Search & Destroy is very good at nailing those dialers. MS Defender does a good job with them as well.

Get Spybot here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Get MS Defender here: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Unless you have a pressing need to access 900 numbers, you can block access to them. Call your phone company.
