Doing something is better than doing nothing - even if the result is the same - at least you will have tried.

Someone listens and that is the people that suffer. To me even if one of these people see that somebody actually cares about what is happening to them, is a victory. And you know that when the goverment doesn't listen to the majority then we no longer have democracy and this goverment will not last long enough. It is we, the people who decide who will be in the goverment the next year. With demonstrations in the past people gained fundamental rights. And if you are talking about the demonstration against the war in Iraq everyone listened except for the politicians. If people didn't demonstrate in all over the world against the war we would have reached our end as humanity. We haven't realised that we have the power in our hands when we vote. So think very careful before voting!!!It is the most important thing for the future of your children!

To show their displeasure to the government. About 1/2
a million people took to the streets in Hongkong in a very
peaceful demonstration and "Broomhead" had to resign.
So demonstrations do have a point. The legislators later
voted against the passing of Article 23 of the Basic Law.
I am really proud of the Hong Kong people, 1/2 a million
people in the streets and no violent incidence. THIS is
the type of demonstration that all nations should employ.

The Iraq war is not the only thing that has ever happened in UK politics. Just because the government did not listen on ONE issue does not mean we should all keep quiet.
Read your history books. The Tollpuddle martyrs, the repeal of the Poll Tax, the Suffragette movement, the civil rights movement in America, the abloition of Aparthied in South Africa, the fall of the Berlin Wall....all this and so much were helped by the power of demonstration of public opinion.

Demonstration worked about 6 months ago in France. Youths demonstrated against a bill that allowed a manager to fire anyone anytime with no weeks or months notice. The government withdrew its bill.

the point is, is because people don't want to give up hope in humanity. they continue to demonstrate in an attempt that people will some day listen to what they have been saying. just like with martin Luther king if he had not demonstrated than black American might still have been slaves. also people demonstrate to exercise their freedom of speech

Public demonstrations are important to let the government know that the people have a concern that will not go away. It may seem like they are ineffective, but they are. they play on the minds of politicians. Public display of discontent should never go out of style. If is does, then you can write off democracy.

All fascists like Bush thrive on your question. Give up, go home and shut up is exactly what they want you to do. And if you are afraid also, they couldn't be more delighted or feel successful. The point is to show they have not won if you are out on the street. Lately the press, although paid off, are jumping ship a little on Bush, so they might even show your protest on the news. Don't give up and go vote the bastards out.

I still enjoy telling all those that I went on a demonstration to protest. It is a matter of pride that even though I knew I would be ignored I got up off my *** and did something.
