Actually, they take a long time to gain the fame associated with a high pay-check....unless, they have been REALLY lucky!!! It seems like they have to earn their wares or they have extremely good publicity people who can convince the paying public of their abilities...as it is actually the "payee" who decides the fame of others. And, if they don't take care of their money, it is like any, particularly, small business...their star fades along with their income. They also must know, before they even get into the game, that they have something in the way of looks, personality and talent in order to persue their dreams (or someone else knows and guides them)...

It is very important for the masses to have working class heros, basically it shows the masses that the system is fair to the point that they can have everything that there is to have on a financial standpoint, this thinking also goes some way into keeping the lid on any civil disturbanceor unrest. The powers that be own the media and use it to pull your focus away from real issues. The illusion of being able to have anything or to have power within the system is merely an illusion. For the ones who gain financial freedom as a working class hero, the reality is quite something else, they lose their privacy and very often get pushed into leading very disjointed lives very often being very self destructive. The worst of all the isms is not racism nor sexism but is classism. The working class hero finds that many of the doors he would have thought he would have access to are actually slammed straight into his / her face.

they make the money they get by viewers. If you star in a movie and it makes tens of millions you make millions. if you are a TV star the money you make is decided on viewership. Big viewership generates interest by companies who want to advertise their wares during that show's broadcast. This gives the show it's income. The bigger ratings a show gets, the more it costs to advertise at that time, the more the TV show makes, the more the actors get paid.

Michael Jordan first made his millions by his talents in basketball. It starts with fans who pay to see him play. His fame, athleticism and personality made millions of people buy products endorsed by him, had his name on it (Air Jordan), or bought something that represented his team, like a (Bulls) jersey.

Notice how most of the WNBA is losing money? It's because not enough people go to their games or buy their products.

The media coverage is for the millions of people who have interest in them and what they do or did.

Bottom line is:
actors and athletes get paid according to their marketability.

Because people are willing to pay them! How many people do you know that will pay to see a movie weekly...monthly...etc.?? How many people do you know that see a foot doctor weekly...monthly...etc.?? How many more movies are bought in the stores than slippers?? Really, it's because we, as customers are willing to pay them more than other people. Also because more people are into movies and sports (they cover a wide genre!!) than people are into other things (they are normall specific) Well, that's my opinion, but I hope it helps solve that lurking question that we all have gotten at one point in time or another.... :o)
