Stem cell research has become a political hotbed again. Since I know some people will vote, at least in part based on it, I am curious how much the average person knows about this research.

True/False Questions.
1) There are 2 types of stem cell research?
2) Embryonic stem cell research is illegal?
3) Adult stem cell research has shown the most progress?
4) Researchers wish to create their own fetuses from laboratory fertilized eggs in order to mine embryonic stem cells for research?
5) Cures for several diseases have been found using embryonic stem cell research?

Essay Question: What is your position on stem cell research? Why? and will it effect the way you vote?

These are just 5 questions, but there are many more. Please feel free to expound on your answers, but do not lecture me about the research. I already know the answers. I have not expressed my position on this research intentionally so as not to skew towards a particular type of answer.

1. Yes, embryonic (which works really great and generates all cell types), and somatic (which requires that stem cells be removed from the body of a living person).
2) Not really. Just Dubya won't fund it.
3) Nope. Lie perpetuated by right wing. Why do you think real scientists keep asking for money for embryonic? They're not morons... Can't generate all cell types, so major limitations with somatic. They have alredy started to differentiate. However, the surplus of funding has made techniques for somatic advance much faster, so in a sense yes.
4) Not really. You can snip off one cell when the blasteocyst is in the 4 or 8 cell stage and not harm the rest of the embryo. Develops normally, and they've been doing it for years for IVF testing to screen for serious genetic defects before implantation.
5) If only! Won't ever do much against cancer or AIDS, but could stop almost everything else you care to think of.

If you wanted the answers of an average person, you are out of luck.

You obviously support somatic stem cell research. This scares me more than embryonic: you need to harvest cells from an adult instead of an embryo. You can get a few at a time from blood without any harm at all, but if you want to work with adult stem cells of other types (say, ovarian or neuron), where do proponents plan on harvesting from? I don't like this idea...

1) True.
2) False. It's just not federally funded.
3) True. There have been many cases of cures found using adult stem cells.
4) I have no idea, but it might be true.
5) Not really.

I support adult stem cell research. I do NOT support embryonic stem cell research. While I know that aborted babies will go to waste if not used, it's still horrible in my opinion, and I still won't vote for anyone who supports it.
Besides, adult stem cell research has yielded more results.

Unless I am mistaken #2 is False

It is not Illegal. The Federal Government will not fund it from tax payer money.

If you, Bill Gates or a drug company wants to do their own research they are free to.
