In the few months before my son (now 24 years old) had his 18th birthday, i was scared to death that something bad would happen. it seems harder and harder to talk to kids about dangers all the time. I knew that the chances of him and his friends celebrating it sober were equivent to "not going to happen" so I decided to have a little party for him. We live on a farm, and Ive spent many days training horses, thus we have a small arena for me to ride in. for a solid week, myself and a good friend of mine worked and worked to plow up the arena, dig huge holes, build a retaining wall of dirt and fill the whole arena with water. I thought it would be fun to play mud football for his birthday. I even played too. his friends were in fact allowed to drink beer and beer only, but everyone understood that if they wanted to drink any beer, they had to put the keys to their cars in my safe. no one left or drove anywhere as long as they had any alcohol in their systems. it was a great time and not one person got in any trouble with the law or with their parents that night. the biggest thing that i was focused on for several weeks prior to his birthday, was how aweful it would be if one of his friends had gotten hurt, killed or arrested because of celebrating my sons birthday. the worst memory of someones birthday shouldnt have to be something so serious. I know that i wouldnt want my home town or friends remembering my birthday because of a bad incident. i realize that a mud football game isnt the best choice for girls and/or people who dont have the availability to an area to do that type of thing, but i strongly suggest that you spend serious time thinking of something that is safe. safe doesnt have to be boring. just use some imagination. if you are going to allow alcohol, at least let your parent (s) know. they will probably appreciate that you are taking the steps to be responsible for your 18th birthday. oh, and try to stay away from those that think that getting completely f***ed up is a great time. they tend to steal away your spotlight by being an idiot. that isnt what you want to remember for the rest of your life. oh, we had tents for everyone to sleep in and served breakfast that we cooked outside over bon fires and grills. his day lasted quite awhile and everyone seems to still remember it as a good time. we used garden hoses to wash off with. his birthday is in the middle of august. yours, like mine is in january so i dont know how willing people would be to take a very cold shower!
