The supermarkets have lovely dresses in at the moment (ASDA and sainsbury's in particular). They are very reasonably priced, and can be worn again for an xmas party.

I am a bridal consultant, and there is no rule of thumb any more when it comes to what a guest wears to a wedding. I have seen everything from shorts to gowns on the guests. The best thing to wear is what makes you feel pretty, but comfortable.
If you have a pretty dress in your closet just buy some accessories (jewlery, chain belts, long scarf w/fringe. etc.) to liven it up. The world of fashion says "accessorize, accessorize, accessorize."
If you decide to buy something new go with the "little black dress (velvet)", they do not have to cost an arma & a leg. The best thing about this dress is you can wear it anytime any where. Put some pretty jewlery with it and you are ready to go.

Plan what you would wear for a Christmas party and tone it down slightly then invest in a coat for during the ceremony and outside. Try Asda or Tesco they have lovely coats for well under £50. Just make sure if you are wearing black that you brighten up with some sparkly accessories in red or silver. Matalan is also worth checking out

A pair of really nice heeled long boots with a fifties style skirt and a cashmere type cardigan would be good, seen this look around the shops recently, though don't know where you'd get all these for £50- Could try Primark

Maybe you should wear a nice suit to the ceremony since it's going to be cold, but change into a nice evening dress for the reception?
There's also a lot of dresses with long sleeves at the moment, mostly casual looking but could be dressed up with the right shoes and jewellry?

There are many sales now on in high street stores.. so pamper yourself for a day and go find the perfect dress. but word of warning... because its high street, you might end up wearing the same outfit as someone else.. so get some cool accessories, ie. your hair accessories as brooches. etc make the "bought" outfit unique as much as possible.
TIP: find out what the colour theme is used by the bride and groom. you don't really want to stick out with clashing colours :P

For a church wedding, accessorise your coat, with a floaty chiffon type scarf and matching sparkly jewellery and gloves
With lots of Christmas party dresses in the shops you should be spoilt for choice, simple classic styles can be used again and again. With your blonde hair, I would opt for a pale blue and a sort of ice maiden look, plus pale blue would be suitable for any future summer weddings too.

I'd get straight onto ebay and find a nice dress. Do you have knee high boots and perhaps a pashmina or wrap you could then wear over it? Alternatively you could try shops like Primark and Peacocks, both are fashionable and cheap. Good luck.
