A number of British newspapers, such as the Culture section of the "Sunday Times" publish weekly lists of the current best selling books, with the numbers of copies sold. These are analysed by hardback/paperback and fiction/non-fiction. I imagine newspapers in other countries do likewise.
The Harry Potter series scored because it overlapped many popular genres - children's books (which are always in demand), adult books, fantasy, detective novel....

I think political compositions about democrats and the wars are most popular, at least where I live. A close second is foreign fiction or bios like Memoires of a Geisha.

It would appear to me that all you have to do is get on a trashy TV show, and then write an auto-biography, probably called 'My Autobiography' (as if it could be anyone elses!)
Cliched, scooby-doo style pulp fiction seems to be popular (Dan Brown), as does fantasy (Harry Potter, Lemony Snickett).
I suppose you could write something about how to save the planet, or how to dress properly, or what sort of house to buy, or recipes for thanksgiving, or.................oh, I'm sure you get the picture.

Paranormal Romance loaded with sex. Not kidding.
So, what you want to write is what intrests you not what sells the best this year. By the time your novel comes out the trend may change, though I don't see that happening too soon.
