Salut! Je suis un Lillois a Londres depuis 3ans, and the best way to find cheap places is on Gumtree.co.uk... I recommend the North of London as the best place to live, with Islington, Camden and Shoreditch my preferred location. And I know a lot of French people living in Kensington which is South West but reasonably more expensive.
Bonne Chance!

Lucifer Sam, everybody knows South London is God's own country; Southwark was an integral part of London when Camden was just a grotty little village. :-) The plague victims were usually buried outside the City walls; Spitalfields, Moorfields and Stepney have been identified as plague burial grounds. As for your other comments, well we've always known how to have a good time down here; don't forget that the theatres were here as well!!

To be honest, there are good and bad places in North and South London but I've always lived (and always will) South of the river. Areas such as Streatham, Clapham etc have decent enough communications and a reasonable night life.

I've lived all over London, but have found its best to live just off a high street, somewhere in zone 2. My favourite high street is Kilburn high street. Its got great transport links to central London(bus, tube, rail), a mix of nice pubs and bars (but not too many) and some clothing shops and supermarkets. There is also a mix of ethnic groups and it feels safe. Prices are quite resonable if you share a flat. You could be looking at £400 /month to share with 2 others in a 3 bed flat.

West Bourne Park. Close to Notting Hill Gate, where there is plenty of night life and jobs to offer (depending on your trade) and cheap enough to get a small flat instead of a bedsit.

has to be north of the river, south isn't really London, its where they buried the plague victims, and sited all the whore houses.
i would recommend anywhere above Kings Cross on the Northern line (tube), Camden Town, Chalk Farm, Belsize Park, Hampstead, etc etc.

Come to North London - it's tidy, it's clean, it's fairly friendly. South London is a dump, there's nothing there, so it might be cheaper - but that'd be the only benefit.

Look on www.gumtree.com

You can get a nice shared house in a pretty north/central location such as Hoxton, Camden or Holloway which are affordable yet cool.

Go on website www.gumtree.com and try to find flat there. and job as well.Cheap in London? you must be joking. Don't look for anything in Central London, no one can effort to rent there. You need to have money for at least 1 months deposit. I live in North London and it's nice area, considering London is huge city, it is hard to tell whats best for you. Avoid Brixton, Hackney, Elephant and Castle, Willesden Green. I don't like those areas and I won't bother you with reasons, just trust me, don't go there.

Look on gumtree.co.uk- there's literally hundreds in every week.

Decide on an area first though- West is nice, North is a dump, but Camden etc are busy, good fun.
