with, it seems, very little justification. Brings down the government, finds he's bitten off more than he can chew and gives the interim government an ultimatum?

Just what have the Iraqi people got to look forward to? Sectarian unrest? Religious conflict? Muslim extremists profiting from the chaos? For the love of Allah - no one could look forward to that!

CM - the whole world stood back and watched Saddam's government gas 5000 Iraqi Kurds in 1988 without so much as a murmur of protest.

You are not missing anything, but a little historical perspective would help most people with this question.

Iraq was invented by the British at at a time when the British Empire was beginning its long decline. The borders took now account of peoples culture and continued the British colonial tradition of divide and rule.

The Kurds yearn to be reunited with other Kurds. Sunni and Shia muslims regard each other as blasphemers, just like the Catholic and Protestant extremists in Northern Ireland.

Iraq can probably only be held together by one sort of dictator or another. The is true of most of the countries of the Middle east who were carved up by the west as the Ottoman Empire collapsed.

War and terrorism will continue, and get worse until the people of the region throw off their oppressors and unite to rid the region of capitalism and the remnants of feudalism.

Well, I am very sure the government of Iraq knows that the US can blow up the entire world many times over.

Call it horrible, but really, nuclear missiles are what help give the US the power to try to maintain the peace.

Yes. Bush marches into Iraq, the oil price goes up. Brings down the government, oil stocks and the Bush family wealth increases. Oil prices start to go down so he arranges a fight between Israel and Lebanon and up prices go again. Oil stocks peak and prices start to go down so he gives Iraq's interim government an ultimatum. As soon as the market thinks US forces are going to pull out, up goes the Bush family's wealth again.

Can we quit beating this dead horse?

Honey, you have missed a lot! Bush didn't just "march into Iraq". Has everyone forgotten the nearly 12 YEARS that 3 different presidents attempted diplomacy with them since the Gulf War? It didn't work! Now shut up about it or go vote and change who is making decisions for you.

Good summary.

Already he's positioning himself to shift the blame onto the fledgling puppet government in Iraq. Beautiful political move.
