Because thats the age where a girl might lose her virginity. Before that she's considered to be a child, after that she's "fair game"

Consider this, most of history has been written by teenagers. Most girls were married off at 14, sometimes as early as 12, and very few as late as 18

via fact its an american custom. Like how mexican ladies have there quinceanera on their fifteenth birthday and jewish boys have their bar mitzvah on their thirteenth birthday. Its a particular birthday via fact which you are able to gain this lots greater, including tension. Im turning sixteen in 7 months :) Do you have a british accessory yet? :P

Because when you reach sixteen, you're still (supposed to be) innocent, ie no smoking, drinking, sex, etc. Catch my drift? That's why there's another saying for sixteen year-olds: "Sweet sixteen and never been kissed".
