I had one blow up on me b/c it got too hot. Plus, the black on the light bulb doesnt look as good in real life as it might in your head.

Hairspray is not flammable: the propellant is sometimes flammable, but not always. So even if you sprayed the bulb, I doubt it would catch fire- the coating would likely crackle like fresh paint on a sunny day.

Spraying light bulbs in black hairspray wouldn't really have the effect you're after because hairspray is designed to be applied as a thin layer, and not clump. Therefore this would not really represent a significant barrier for incandescent light.

You're much better off creating box lanterns out of coat hangers and black tissue paper; people will admire your Blue Peter-esque skills, and you will get the dark light you wanted without setting fire to your home, or making it smell like a cheap hair salon.

Spraying water on a light bulb will just wet the bulb. But if the bulb is hot the bulb has had time to expand under the heat. But touch a hot bulb with water. The Difference in temp. contracts the glass in the bulb shrinks at different rates through out the glass in the bulb. The glass being of a solid the quick change in temp. over stresses the glass and breaks away from that change.

Get some dark-coloured bulbs, like green or blue. DON'T spray the bulb. When it gets hot the spray could evaporate and give off toxic fumes, or it could cause the bulb to shatter.

Hairspray is flammable. Light bulbs get hot when switched on..... do I really need to continue?
Try red light bulbs instead. They give a really scary glow and are readily available in B&Q. Just don't sit in front of the window when you have the red light on, or you may find yourself being arrested!!!!!

if you did this you would not need to worry about lightbulbs or using hairspray again.

You would only need candles as the electric would blow and you would be bald where the explosion burnt your hair off.

a good way to create darkness is leave the lights off(a bit scientific i know) or close the curtains.

use pumpkins with tea lights in them- cut out the usual scary faces.

sound effects are good- get some creepy sounds off the internet and burn them on to cd.

have a great party.

Be careful, a black coating on an ordinary 100W or 60W light bulb might cause it to overheat. It might be safe with a low-power bulb like a nightlight.

It depends on how flammable it is. When the bulb heats up, the hairspray may ignite or become very hot causing the bulb to crack and hence blow. Its best to buy a tinted bulb.

Things would go too dark and you would not get the right affect,
clean the bulbs first with some diluted water.

The lacquer would get very hot and burn. It probably wouldn't do a great deal of damage, but it would smell horrible. Not quite the scary effect you were looking for.
