Personally, given the state where I live has degenerated into, I just ignore the doorbell. It's usually teenage boys expecting money..
However, years ago (back when parents took young kiddies out for sweets or fruit) my dear old gran (bless her - she was going a bit cuckoo with age) answered the door. She'd been preparing dinner. She was holding a knife and had blood stains on her apron from the liver she'd been chopping. Poor little children... :)

Our first year in this house a few eedjits came around - no fancy clothes - just demanding their treat, so we said get knotted. The little b*st*rds were banging on doors and windows half the night, really freaked me out.
Those kids are long "grown up" but ever since we just buy a few cheap sweets or nuts in and hand any callers a few with a smile. Anyway they know we're in 'cos the cars are there.

I have purchased a SCREAM mask especially for the occasion - I will pop my head round the door to scare the little blighters when they come a'knockin - and then give them loads of sweets cos I'm a soft touch really (just with a mischievous streak!).

As i live in England, it is not that customary to have trick or treaters - if there are any, they are usually with their parents and go to arranged houses to do it. I would open the door and say trick, can't be bothered to carry on a ridiculous american tradition!

Have someone inside to answer the door while I hide outside in the bushes. While they're distracted by the candy, jump out and scare the heck out of them. That's what Halloween is all about!

I dress up as something horrific, and use mood lighting...when the kids come, I open the door a bit and cackle...if that doesn't make them run off, I have a bucket of water to throw on them!

I think it's fun and I enjoy the kids, but I try and avoid answering the door if it's scabby teenagers just wanted money. However I did answer my door to two girls of around 13 yrs once who were carol singing and sung a whole carol before asking for money, they admitted it was for themselves and I gave them a little just for being gutsy!

I give candy...but before I do, I jerk the door open right before they ring the bell and scare the sh-t out of them!
When I am tired of handing out candy, I flag down the kid with the best costume and dump the whole bowl in his bag, then turn out the porch light.

I pretend im not in on the run up to it.
Dont get me wrong, i dont mind them on the night but we had people 2 weeks ago. Its just too damn early.
On the night, we normally give them a handful of sweets.
