Why do I need an equivalence to be represented?
If I have no self then I have no individuality, and thus any talk about "I" is moot.
I need my "self" for the same reason I need my life: without it, I'm just a body.

This question , for me, is like putting the cart before the horse.
Why does the "self" need you? ...would be more appropriate. The self is completely different from you though it is always identified as YOU. You are sometimes a father, a son, a friend, rich , an engineer.. How can you be so many things at the same time? If you are you you should be you always. You are simply taking on various roles in life.
The self is always self, never changing. It is not the question of you needing the self. It is there .You cannot wish it away.
The self needing you? samlyn? John? . It does not matter . it is there in all. It boils down to you represent "samlyn" . You , samlyn are present in self.

Self is the body and my is the soul or some call it the spirit!
The body is dead with out the spirit!
Therefore you need your "self"
To host you for representation.....
Good question
