In the UK, we have free education, free health care, very generous social security .... jobs for all - should I feel sorry for homeless people? Because I don't. I think it's natural selection, and they must be pathetic to live in such a rich country and not even make money - is this wrong? discuss.....

When I was a kid I was homeless twice..Once because my mother and I ran away from my monster father and the friends my mother trusted ditched us and stole our money...
the second was when my step-dad was betrayed by a friend of promises of a better job elsewhere...we lived in a van. When you it bottom no one ever gives you a chance because people think "it's someone else's problem" Even in lands of plenty there is a such thing to beaten down from poor choices, but it could happen to anyone...I owe my life to those selfless few who cared.

We are all perhaps one step away from humility. So many live paycheck to paycheck with no savings and in debt to their necks. All it takes is one to get ill or loose their job and then they too are out on the streets. Not everyone is blessed with a family, friends or a support system. So, when the worst happens their options are few. Imagine if it were you. Really think about it!!!! Don't be so quick to judge. "Until you have walked in an others shoes you will never know" Try to learn some understanding and compassion. The homeless population grows larger each year... Perhaps someday it may include you. I hope not. We should search for solutions to help rectify this tragic situation instead of standing in judgment.... Just a thought...Peace....

Depends, some of them do it just for money and maybe because they want people to feel sorry for them like a Histrionic person, Alot of the time they are mentally Ill or unemployed, a good idea is for homeless people to go to places with a low unemployment rate like don't go to Los Angeles or New York or San Diego go to least expensive places but how will u get that help? I'm not the expert, maybe the state can help, hopefully there not like Wahh are population is dropping!

Because if things went wrong, one day that could be YOU!.

I know what it is like to go from a a very comfortable affluent life to living from hand to mouth and nearly being homeless. No it wasn't due to "laziness" or being "pathetic" but basically ill health, relationship breakdown and bad luck.

We are struggling to survive right now - we're just about doing it and no we don't have family who can help and the government don't give a toss so I wouldn't worry about your taxes going to support people like us. We get no help from them whatsoever. If you lose your home because you can't pay your mortgage the council will find you "intentionally homeless" and won't house you - they'll leave you out on the street.

"There but for the Grace of God go I" as they say.

You nasty selfish little man.

Even though there is plenty of housing it is very difficult to get housed once homeless unless you fall into the vulnerable person category. You can't get any sort of benefit without an address, you can't start work without an address. To get an address you need some sort of money coming in and it can be a vicious circle. Beggars are a different matter as most of them are housed and are begging for drugs money, or food money as they have spent their money on drugs

If you read up on alcoholism you find most homeless people are alcoholic and tend to be successful people who have fallen. One case in america were a billionaire lost everything though drinking and was reduced to cleaning pot in a kitchen, he was struggling and his life too was heading for the streets. If you look at the steet people as mentally ill you would be sympathetic with them. We all can end up on the streets. One rich lady had a big house somewhere but couldn't remember where it was!

The Big Issue is a magazine sold by homeless and vulnerably housed individuals on the streets of the UK. There are five editions across the United Kingdom: The Big Issue, The Big Issue in the North, The Big Issue Scotland, The Big Issue South West and The Big Issue Cymru.

The Big Issue's aim is to help homeless and vulnerably housed individuals help themselves by providing the means to earn a legitimate income through sales of the magazine. It provides an alternative to the illegal activity of begging for some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Founded by John Bird and Dave Bulldog in September 1991, The Big Issue is edited by professional journalists. Vendors earn an income by investing their own money in buying the magazine at a wholesale price and then selling it on to the public at the stated cover price. The Queen once bought a copy of the Big Issue from a street vendor.

The magazine is produced by The Big Issue Co. Ltd. and is funded by paid for advertising and through sales of the paper to vendors. Financially, The Big Issue is a not-for-profit organization. It is also one of the foremost social businesses in the UK.

The magazines are written by professional journalists and aim to raise awareness of social issues as well as offering broad coverage of music and the arts. Each regional magazine has its own editor and editorial staff

There is no reason why you should care. I care because I recognise that homeless people are on the street for any number of reasons including, mental illness or breakdown, alcoholism and because, after a lifetime in care their childhood has not equipped them for life in society.

Lucky you, if these difficulties are beyond your experience. The law of the jungle and the "natural selection" argument have no place in a civilised society

Some people just are unfortunate. Things happen that isnt always under their control so your wrong to think all of them are pathetic. Some do try and get jobs but once you lose everything you've got, its very hard to get back on your feet, especially when people like you don't give them a chance.

i disagree with you.. people get in those circumstances because of drug or alcohol abuse. remember both of the above are habits that when they get out of hand can destroy a life. Never give them money though ......ever.....ever. but you should definitely ask them if you can help them. they will usually reject any thing that is not change which they use to get more alcohol and drugs. I talk to the homeless all the time near my college and they seem to accept the way things are... but i always talk to them and make sure they have me to talk to.

Because you might be with them some day. Whatever you do to the least of these you do to me, suggests that we are all connected and to hold differences against people is a disease of the mind. You don't have to like them. But not care? I would be worried about myself if I got there.
