We do now. There's a 2 million watt laser they're testing for missile defense. It takes a 747 to carry it, so there's still some work to do before you have a pocket sized model.

Every thing on Star Trek has come true or will come true. Except for the transporter.. (in our lifetime).. What ever you see going on ? Military has a lot going on these days.. that we don't see.

you cant make something in to nothing. when you laser someone there will be partials that will be displaced.

the same is true you cant make something out of nothing
