Do you have to now remove all ages on application forms (past already in a file)? someone has told me today at work that all ages have to be removed from job application forms? is this correct if so why?

I;ve not heard of that,
but I do question why you could change a form that was signed by someone else. would that not invalidate it?

the only reason I can think of is if they are trying to cover a age discrimination suit.

but come to think of it all the apps I have filled out always ask ,
are you over 18,
not your age.
( since you do have to be 18, or 21 in some jobs selling cigarettes or alchol for example)

If they're already on file and were processed before the law came into effect then no, you don't have to go around removing them all (as that would take our department forever!) but you can no longer ask for age / date of birth and you can't state that you want so many years experience unless you have evidence that someone less experienced would be unable to do the job. So you couldn't ask for ten years experience for a job that requires only a year of training.

Age Discrimination Act October 2006 applicable from 1st Day of October means 'Age' can't be a factor in recruitment process.
Not only you don't need to quote age on form but any other attempt to ascertain age are blocked e.g. High School Dates etc.

It's to do with the age discrimination law that it's not good to ask for people's age so you can't judge them on that basis, however if you were interested you could work it out from their work and education dates anyway, so it doesn't make too much difference so far as I can see

A new anti-ageist law (UK) came into force a few weeks back and in theory it is now illegal to ask someone for their age on application forms. Forms submitted before the law came into force I imagine are exempt.
