Move fast, they may be going down the tube, it's a delaying tactic to buy some time.

Write to them three times asking for your money and an explanation using recorded delivery. Then take out a summons using the small claims court, you can get the all info you need to do this by typing 'small claims' into Yahoo! You will win your claim and get back the cost of the summons. A cheque is a promise to pay money in writing and the court will see it as such. You will usually find that they give in and send you the money without going to court. If you do have to attend the court you will find that they are sympathetic to the small man (or woman). Do make sure before you do this that they are still in business, if they are not, I'm sorry to say that you've had it.
How do I know all this? I've done it and won, not just once, and you will too, don't let these people get away with it, you worked for that money and they have no right to withold it from you.
I hope this helps,
bretret

It will mean one of two things, either they do not have the funds in the account to pay you or they have cancelled the payment with the bank as they do not intend you to have the money. The first thing to do is contact the company and approach them on the subject. Tell them the cheque has been stopped and ask them what they are going to do about it.
If they are refusing to pay you can take it to small claims court and ( its very simple just a couple of forms to fill in and you do not have to employ a solicitor) retrive the money that way. It is a long route. The last time I went it took fourteen months but that was a long time ago, maybe it is quicker now.

Write (don't phone) to the Company Secretary at the company's registered office (this should be on their letterhead, if not you can get it from Companies House website). Explain why you're entitled to the money and that they are in breach of contract by stopping the cheque. Tell them that if they have not put things right within 14 days, you'll start legal proceedings. If they ignore you, take out a County Court summons. (You can do this online).
One possibility is that the company has gone bust. If this is the case, you'll have to join the queue with their other creditors and you may not get your money.

Phone the company and tell them that the cheque has been stopped. They may have made a mistake.

Technically Stopping a cheque is illegal - a person/organisation normally only does this with agreement from the Payee (you.)
It seems they do not wish to pay you at all if they are refusing to discuss the matter.
I recommend visiting your local Citizens Advice Bureau. or if you want to cut out the middle man the use:

you have to go back to the company who issued the payment, or talk to a solicitor
Unfortunately many larger companies take advantage of smaller ones by delaying payments in order to make extra money on the interest. In the meantime, many smaller businesses go out of business. A bigger bonus for them, because they don't pay out at all.
You may have to issue a claim against them, charge them interest on the balance outstanding like a bank... and a fee for every letter issued (you get the idea)
and good luck

I am sure that stopping a cheque is fraud unless it has been done for security reasons, for instance if it has been lost or duplicated.Try them again if no success try a solicitors letter.Citizens advice may be able to help.
