WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Thursday that anyone demanding deadlines for progress in
Iraq should "just back off," because it is too difficult to predict when Iraqis will resume control of their country.

Yes, yes we should. Then bury our heads in the sand whilst presenting our uncovered bottoms to big Don so he could then continue to give us a good @rse-shagging to accompany his bu llshit

Well I do believe he was specifically speaking to the media...which I suppose , indirectly is to the voters.... he cannot predict, nor can anyone else when exactly Iraqi government will be able to fully take care of its own. Look back into our great history and how long it truly took us to have full Independence from England!!!!
We escaped, fought revolutionary wars, civil war etc...
None of our leaders then set "benchmarks" or "timelines".

Rumsfeld wouldn't have told me to back off because I would have phrased my questions AND tones differently. He's Secretary of Defense not a spokesperson, I personally appreciate (whether he's right or wrong) a man in that position to stand up. We don't need some overly politically correct pansy in that seat. It's War....not debate!!

I wouldn't dare to get into a name calling contest with a person like Rumsfeld. I mean how do you tell an idiot he's an idiot without name calling? I do believe in situations like Rumsfeld, it's a trait passed down from family member to family member and quite possibly he can't help himself. Do we need to feel sorry for people like this? Even though he has the ability to take us to World War III? I think yes. Maybe he just can't help it.

Next, Osman bin Laden will ask that we "just back off". Rummy and Osman, two feathers of a kind, probably having a good laugh at all of us at the bar in the Hilton, with Paris serving Bloody Mary's.

I know of an old soldier who took a swing at Rumsfeld. He had the right idea.

I would ask him if he remembers the goddamn first amandment. But you see it's not his fault, everbody knows he's incompetent at his job except for the person that matters the most, his boss our President.

Yeah, we should back off him---or more succinctly, back him off--the open door of an airplane.
