CPU stands for CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT.

All of the information goes through that device. It reads the information, somehow breaks it down into some sort of data it can decipher and makes a "decision" what to display as the final information.

Example;
When you type in a website it transfers what you type into a number code and tells the internet server what you want to view.

When you click on a saved program, it looks at the request you made, goes looking for matching information in the memory bank and on the hard drive and splashes the information on the monitor.

It does what the human brain does in some respects so comparing it to a brain just seemed logical.

Cars with electronic systems that monitor fuel and emissions are referred to as having a brain. Because it too processes lots of information.

Central Processing Unit, it's where all the calculations happen. The CPU is the part of the computer which carries out instructions, and programmers write the software which contains those instructions.

Your CPU can then instruct other parts of your computer, such as your disk drives or your sound card, to do things. None of them are programmable directly without going through the CPU first.
