We have some ageing Compaq PCs at work which are utterly horrendous to use so you have my sympathies!

There have been some pretty awful computers in the past, and the further back in time you go the worse they seem to be.

The best computer is fairly subjective. In the PC world the more money you spend on a computer the better it is, although the downside is it depreciates in value faster!

I'm a PC network admin and I've never owned a Mac, but I think my next purchase will be a Mac Mini - they're inexpensive, reliable, virus-free and cool :)

The worst computer ever made was actually the first one. It was about the size of a one car garage and it didn't have transistors, it used vacuum tubes. On the average it could run for ten minutes before it crashed because of the failure rate of the vacuum tubes and the ancient circuitry.
But one must crawl before one can walk so that was the starting point for computers.

As far as best, you might try finding an issue of consumer reports or going to PC world and hoping they have a comparison of newer PC's for you to review.

I have heard good things about the latest Hewlett Packards. I don't own one but the HP printers I own have been most reliable and I use them pretty hard.

My PC is a one of a kind built by my friend who is a computer troubleshooter. If you know someone like that he/she can build you one with a wide assortment of the most reliable parts. Mine has all circuit boards that are replaceable and upgradable because they are not hard soldered in place. I can upgrade anytime by just switching components.
The modem sits outside the PC and does not use as much of the PC memory as the internal kind. It is much faster than the internal. I can't use cable internet because it is not available where I live.

Wish you luck, hope I have been of some help.
