When you turn the car key WITHOUT actually starting the engine, you can still use the A/C and listen to CD or radio, right? But somebody said that will hurt the car, and it is better if i actually start the car (start the engine) and use them (while parked). Is this true at all?

Depends, but if the battery is in good condition and the radio is the stock unit, then you can listen to the radio for literally hours before you drain the battery. There will be some drain on the battery, but if you're only talking about a time frame of an hour or two, then the drain will be negligible. With said, if the car has a high end aftermarket audio setup with a couple amps and sub woofers and such, then the battery can be drained much more quickly.

Without actually starting the engine, and your running the AC you say..the only thing running is the blower motor, not the AC compressor. And if you turn your key back to accessory you can play your radio all you want, your battery will eventually drain down. Basically your Air Conditioning is not running, it is just a blower motor blowing the air out through the ducts. The engine has to run for the AC to work plus is it a gas or diesel engine. Because if it is a diesel it can idle all day long.

the battery drains really quick. the AC doesn't actually come on because the engine isn't running to turn on the pump so it is just blowing out cool air instead of cold. but other than that i think the only damage is going to battery. on some cars you can turn the key all the way back and use the radio that way and it uses less battery. that's just what i have heard. my fiancees car doesn't turn backward though. :) hope i helped

I haven't seen where it 'hurt' the car, but I have surely seen it run down the battery.
They either mean it will run down the battery, or that the A/C will not cool without the compressor which in most cars (as far as I am aware) needs to have the engine running to utilize.

First of all, the AC in your car wont work unless your car is running. The AC compressor is run by the belts on the front of your motor. Second, Idleing your car isnt good either. When your car sits and runs at low RPMs it allows carbon build up and other build up in your engine and exhaust. Third your battery will eventually die, and they are not cheap.

It will drain your battery if you don't start the car. The a/c will not blow cool air, only the fan will blow if the engine is turned off.
