It says under it to give them a name, relationship, years acquainted, phone#, and e-mail address. I'm 17 years old and this is my first job application.

It generally refers to people who can vouch for your reputation, character and/or job ethic, if you were previously employed. The company that you are applying for will contact these listed persons to gather info about you.

It would usually mean former bosses, managers etc.

If you're young ask your school teacher to act as a referee - also ask a personal (older) or family friend if they will act as referee. Don't use one of your parents. Ask them to comment on times that you have taken responsibility, worked well with others.

Also if you've done any babysitting, leadership activities you may want to mention these as things at the interview or in your covering letter/personal statement.
