A 'road' is a street with businesses, a 'street' is a pathway whose purpose may change as one is traveling on it, but the name should definitely stay the same. 'Avenue' is usually a street like a 'drive'. It's got mostly houses / apartments on it but Ave is used mostly in the northern states. Boulevard has homes and businesses on it and has a lot of traffic.
