Lots of ways:
- Miminize weight carried (get rid of extra weight in trunk)
- Keep tires filled as recommended. Low tires drag.
- Keep mechanically tuned. Tuneup prevents misfire and wasted gas from a poor burn in the cylinder. Dragging brake robs milage.
Don't let the car idle. I have turned off the car at a railroad crossing for a long train and save gas. Drive as soon as possib le when starting to keep from idling.
- Try to keep a constant speed when driving. If possible, stay around 50-55 mph. The best speed for you is the one where the tachometer (engine speed) is the lowest.
My favorite: Drive the car for milage rather han speed.
Let me explain this way...If you start and stop quickly, the car burns more gas to accelerate and the momentum of the car going fast is robbed on a fast stop. Step on the brake and gas pedal like you were stepping on an egg and trying not to break it. That means letting the car cruise to a stop without using the brake until the last mnute if possible or stepping on it gently to coast to a stop.[There is one more benefit to this, the brakes do not wear...I got 80,000 miles out of a set of brakes last year driving this way]. I have been getting an extra 5 mph by driving this way
Look at the advice given to hybrid car drivers...it applies to all people. If youu start and stop this way, they save gas, so do you.

Since you didn't list what type of vehicle, whether it's 1992 or older, try to find which type of gas you get the best mileage with. Canadian Shell is a good one, Exxon these are two of the best quality fuels. You don't have to run higher octane. I improved my mileage just by running Shell Regular gas. After that you can start with a better exhaust system, a cold air intake, and if its a newer vehicle you can buy a scan gauge. And the scan gauge plugs into your cars computer and will tell you exactly what gas mileage you are getting. After that, after you find the best gas then run 2 ounces of Acetone per 10 gallons of gas. And you should start noticing a considerable increase. And another thing, keep your foot out of it. The Acetone will not do any damage to your censors or engine, just keep it off the paint.

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon.. Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons. Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money. One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount. Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

Improve your driving technique. Don't over accelerate when it's not necessary. Pay attention to what's happening ahead of you, and take your foot off the accelerator when approaching a stop. I have a Honda insight hybrid. I also have an Acura that shows real time gas usage. People waste so much gas every day!

Maintenance, all the filters, spark plugs, wires, cap, ignition rotor, your alignment, tire pressure, chevron fuel works better (try it if you dont believe me), even a synthetic oil helps, and your driving habits; slower acceleration uses less fuel but gets you to the same speed, stay in one lane-a straight line is the shortest to any destination. The speed limit is usually best. All sorts of stuff contribute to fuel mileage. Its hard to say wether spending all that money on maintenance is cheaper than a little lower fuel economy.
