The Original Six is the term used by fans of ice hockey to refer to the six teams that made up the National Hockey League from the 1942-43 season through to before the league's expansion in 1967. They are:

Montreal Canadiens (1909, charter member of NHL in 1917)
Toronto Maple Leafs (charter member in 1917)where Toronto Arenas from 1917-1918 then changed to Toronto St_Pats till 1927, but it was a totally new team that came in not even same owners. Toronto Maple Leafs 1927.
Boston Bruins (1924) first American team in the NHL.
Detroit Red Wings (1926)
Chicago Black hawks (1926)
New York Rangers (1926)

The term is a misnomer; as shown above, only the two Canadian teams were charter members of the NHL, and three other expansion teams (the Montreal Maroons, the New York Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates) were all likewise added to the league after its foundation. The Boston Bruins were the first American franchise, and the other three American teams joined the league in an earlier expansion that enlarged the league to ten teams, its maximum size before 1967. But all six of them do date from the league's first decade, and the six teams formed the entire league for 25 years after such franchises as the Maroons, Americans, and the original Ottawa Senators were bankrupted by the Great Depression. After World War II, the NHL owners consistently rejected any bids for expansion, and in the eyes of many observers changed the criteria for entry every time with a bent to defeating any such bid. They also reneged on promises to allow the still-extant Maroons and Americans to rejoin the league.

1967: Expansion era

The 1967-68 NHL season was the 51st season of the National Hockey League. Twelve teams each played 74 games. This season saw the NHL expand from the "Original Six" teams by adding six new franchises. The St. Louis Blues, California Seals, Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Los Angeles Kings were all put into the Western Division. On November 6, 1967,1 the California Seals were renamed Oakland Seals.

jibberjab...>>>> you are wrong my friend the Canucks didnt come in till 1970. 1967 Expansion era was with The St. Louis Blues, California Seals, Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Los Angeles Kings.

AwesomeBi...>>>> the Oilers joined in 1979 not 1973 and the Montreal Canadiens where founded in 1909 the NHL started in 1917 and the Toronto Maple Leafs joined in 1927 it was the Toronto Arenas in 1917-18 then change name the following year to the Toronto St-Pats till 1927. the owner of the Pats wasnt liked by the NHL so a new owner cam and bought the team and thats when the Toronto Maple Leafs were founded in 1927 not 1917 like most think.

NHL (1917)

The National Hockey League started out with 5 franchises, Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Toronto Arenas, Quebec Bulldogs and Ottawa Senators. The Toronto Arenas won the Stanley Cup in the first year. The National Hockey League eventually gained control of the Stanley Cup in 1926 and from then on it could only be won by NHL teams instead of other league champions challenging for this cup
Not to mention the Seattle Mteropolitans who were the 1st US team to win the Stanley. Also you had the Montreal Maroons and the Toronto St.Patricks.
