Imperialism has sounded the death knell to the small scale and cottage industries. The imperialist forces treated the vassal states as their dumping ground for marketing their products produced by machinery, in a mass scale. Their aim was amassing wealth, without minding the livelihood of the subjects and about the environmental consideration. There started the ravaging of the environment, with the overexploitation of the limited resources of Nature.

In the days of European colonialism, no-one paid much attention to the environment, either in Europe or in the colonies.
