Hello..
I just bought a new computer that has XP.. 256 megs ram.. 64 megs (shared) video ram.. I understand that I need more memory to get a long.. But sometimes.. (Mostly using games, But not always) I'll get a low virtual memory message.. E-Machines has the virtual memory set at..
Initial Size.. 336
Maximum Size.. 672

Should I change this to "System Managed Sized"?
Anyone with a E-Machine that has done this?
Thanks..

if you have 2 partitions on the drive in this months issue of pc magazine it says to set virtual memory paging to a diffrent partion to make it faster or you can use a extra drive and set it to that drive

You just need alot more RAM. If you're trying to game on that computer, 1GB is the absolute minimum for gaming, even if you aren't having to share your system RAM with onboard graphics.

Before your newly purchased RAM arrives, though, you'll want to do this:
1)Right-click on My Computer
2)Select Properties, from the drop-down box that will appear
3)Click on the Advanced tab
4)Under Performance, select Settings
5)Under Performance Options, select Advanced
6)Under Virtual Memory, select Change
7)Then, select Custom Size, and put these options into the two boxes: 2046 in the top box, and 4096 in the bottom box

All of your problems will go away, and your gaming will be 10x as good, once you install at least 1GB more of RAM. The reason your computer is pausing every couple of seconds (while gaming) is so it can load data from the hard drive. With more RAM, that won't happen.

virtual memory is important in gaming, CAD software, graphic, photo or video editing and many more. increase your virtual memory at 1000mb initial/minimum size and 3000mb maximum. it is wise if you separate your virtual memory hard drive space from your installed software program, using a different partition or a separate hard disk drive. this will significantly improved pc performance. virtual memory will be use by your system same like using your system ram. i suggest you upgrade your ram to 512mb (at least). separate display/vga/agp card is also very important in gaming. try installing a new display card with at least 128mb of ram on it (vga/agp/pci exp. card). if you got a tight budget, install the display card first and disable the shared video memory. this will do for now. try to upgrade your system ram later to enjoy a good gaming experience.
