It became almost a fad. Don't see it quite as much as a few years ago; mostly in the 2nd/3rd tier films.

I believe it started with creature features like Alien. The idea is to taste the fear of the victim.

Old fat men with money directing pretty girls...hmmm I just think they just pitch it off as good while getting their thrills.

I think it was was for the "gross out factor". So many did it because it looked good when the first one did.
