So the coach wants at least 5 more (so we already know that this is a greater than or equal to problem) than the point ratio from last year, which was 544/17.

OK, so this year they need to score more than 544/17 + 5 per game, right?

In engineering, this is already solved, but since this is probably public school, we need to go to the calculator:

544/17=32
32+5=37

I guess that means that they need to score greater than or equal to 37 points per game, on average. Agreed?

544 points in 17 games last year means 544/17 = 32 points per game

the coach wants them to score at least 5 more points per game, so that is at least 37

37 x 18 = 666 (eeeeekkk!!!)

let n = number of points the team must score

n >= 666

Couple of disturbing things about this problem:
1) I lost my calculator and had to do long division! (ugh!)
2) the number 666, is this homework due on Halloween or something?
3) why is the coach so competitive and pressuring the kids to score 5 more points per game? doesn't he know that sports is really about fun and it's not about winning and losing?
hmmm...

good luck and keep practicing

18*[(544/17) + 5]<= total number of pts to meet season goal

hi, I'm sleepy but I"LL try, seems like they were averaging 32 pts.per game. 544/17 games=32pts per game. they want at least 37per game in 17 gamesto do this. but they have 1 extra game to do this. seems they need 83.647 pts. for the season to do this. and if you devide that 83.647 by 18 games =83.88 pts over the entire season i get 4.66 extra pts. per game. that does not hit the five pt extra per game. but it does give them the total # of pts they need to beat the 544 pts per season. this is all I can do tonight, but if you can get back to me in the morning, my Dad is great at this type of problem and he can write an inequality that will give you a definitive answer. jeff
