You might want to follow the link below and read an article called "What happened before the Big Bang" by Paul Davies. It's a lot more involved than the "God did it" answer, but if you take the time to read about it, you may find it more enlightening. It has the added benefit of actually being scientific!
What Happened Before the Big Bang?
Paul Davies
Well, what did happen before the big bang?
Few schoolchildren have failed to frustrate their parents with questions of this sort. It often starts with puzzlement over whether space "goes on forever," or where humans came from, or how the planet Earth formed. In the end, the line of questioning always seems to get back to the ultimate origin of things: the big bang. "But what caused that?"
Children grow up with an intuitive sense of cause and effect. Events in the physical world aren't supposed to "just happen." Something makes them happen. Even when the rabbit appears convincingly from the hat, trickery is suspected. So could the entire universe simply pop into existence, magically, for no actual reason at all?

God began with a breath and the realization that he was there. He was alone and created all reality below him. Not to control, but observe and for company. This is why he talked with adam, eve, and the other first people.
A day is to a thousand years and a thousand years to a day...the earth and all was not created in 7 real days as we see them. Also during creation, there were no such things as days, nights. Since in space, there is no days and nights time cannot be measured in days and nights, or even hours for that matter. Time is on earth and created by man.
A combination of creation and what you know about science and whay you hear inside yourself when you ask is the reality of the universe being started or coming to be.

You assume 2 things common to your culture. 1 -- the universe had a beginning, and 2 -- the universe was created by something (and creation is an act of intelligence).
Other assumptions are possible. To quote the Christian liturgy (and how they allow in this much mysticism is a mystery), "As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end," which seems to suggest not only no end but no beginning either: the universe just IS, and that's a theory not only from Hinduism but also British astrophysicist Fred Hoyle (who derisively called theory held by his contemporaries "the Big Bang").

Some people think it was God's work.. Others think it was a nuclear blast and we live on one of those nutrons... Some people think that when this blast is done.. It will fall back within itself.. Since the universe has a long time of spreading itself around.. It will come to an end.. But not in your lifetime.. It's still expanding.. Never forget that we are in the Milkyway.. There is many Milkyways just like us.. Galaxys.. It will fall back within it self.. Others think different.. Time to go to the library and read what others think.. The Universe is way too big for me and others to answer your question.. Just read and do your best..

To be honest no human that has ever walked the earth will KNOW for sure. Evolutionist think they know, christians think they know, there is an answer and nobody KNOWS for sure, no matter how much they say they do. Its a fact, so the harder you look the more frustrated you will get because it came about SOOO long ago it is literally IMPOSSIBLE to know for sure, scientist can come up with decent theories and what not but like I have said 100 times already, you will not know for sure.

Oh oh, you're in for a whole lot of creationist theories here.... "Well my son, GOD created the earth, the sea blah blah blah, we just ignore evolution and all that scientific MUMBO JUMBO! My parents told me this is how it happened so that's how it happened OK?"
I don't know the details sorry, try looking up 'the Big Bang' on Google.

This is one of "lifes questions" There is no right answer, just opionion. If you believe in God then you may believe that he created earth. If not, you may base your opionion on science. The world may never know...
