Besides regular and on time servicing. Does it help, if we put it on "neutral" each time while waiting at the traffic light?

Most wear to the gearbox occurs as it shifts fom one gear to the next so shifting to neutral at each light would probably not be a good idea.

There are a few things you can do though. One is to always warm the engine to operating temperature (and consequently the gearbox) in the vehicle during cold weather before driving. Another is to drive at a gentle and even speed, especially at the points where the gearbox is shifting. And if you are going up a moderate hill on which the gearbox would continually shift back and forth between gears then it is a good idea to manually downshift to avoid the extra wear and tear of repeated shifting.

You did not say what kind of car, but generally you should change your fluid every 20 to 30 thousand miles (or the KM equv. if you are not in the USA). It is not necessary to take it out of gear at stop lights. One thing that can help if you have the normal "overdrive" 4 or 5 speed automatic.. it is good for it to not run it in the overdrive gear if you are in city traffic at low speeds ..say under 40 mph. Most auto transmissions tend to wear out the overdrive bands if lugged in city traffic all of the time, this also causes the torque converter to be in it's unlocked condition causing slippage inside that generates heat.. the number 1 cause of transmission failures..
