I've been freezing pieces of banana, avocado and recently grapes for my 11-month old. I buy them fresh, cut them up and give them to her fresh for the first couple days, but when they start getting a bit too over ripe/soft I freeze the remainder of them.

She loves them frozen as much as fresh, but every time I bring them to my Mom's place my Mom doesn't really like feeding them to her because they are often mushy & watery when they defrost. (Seems to me a toothless baby might actually prefer this.)

Sure they are a bit more messy (which seems to be the underlying complaint) but my Mom says she's more concerned that they lose all their nutritional value from freezing.

Many people seem to freeze fruits and put them in mesh feeders for teething so I don't suspect there's a problem with this... my daughter never really got the hang of a mesh feeder, but that's not the point, are frozen fruits nutritionally okay?

Also, what other fruits do you freeze for your babies?

Thanks

Hi! You asked a very valid question. Freezing is much better than canning. The nutrients lost in the cooking process are the problem there. Also, frozen has no added sugars. Just be aware that when you thaw the fruit, it will be mushy and some things , like bananas, can change a bit in color. Frozen fruits and vegetable are what are recommended over canned by WIC and my pediatrician. As for the grapes, they are a choking hazard. If you aren't already doing it, you need to peel the grapes and then freeze them. When you thaw the frozen fruit or vegetable, try mixing and mashing a little more to eliminate that watery texture. As far as what can be frozen, anything can be if mushy is what you are looking for. My favorites to freeze for my grandson are zucchini, pumpkin, tomatoes, homemade spaghetti sauce, green beans (raw), peaches, pears, bananas, and cantaloupe. My son is allergic to strawberries. So, we have to avoid anything with strawberries until my grandson can be tested for that. That was the advice of the pediatrician. It is also not recommended for children under 7 years to have strawberries. Why do baby foods have strawberries in them? To attract the parents and grandparents making the purchases. That was precisely what WIC and the pediatrician stated. I hope this helps.

No, I don't think this takes away from the nutrients. A microwave will, but freezing should be just fine. It's a lot better than french fries and icecream! When she starts teething the cold will feel really good on her gums! Don't moms always seem to think they know all when it comes to grandbabies? Bring fresh fruit to your mom's house and feed her the frozen ones at home to avoid the disagreement... what mommy doesn't know won't hurt her :)

My son became a similar way. He have been given a super form of foodstuff from the applesauce (i discovered blending in mashed banana worked properly too), yet whilst i began out to rigidity I merely supplemented his eating regimen with toddler supplements. It made his stood very difficult and he did no longer like the flavor, so i does no longer propose giving him an entire dose. you additionally can examine including your well-being care expert and see approximately categories of supplements, we used fish oil and it worked properly, pungent yet properly. fairly however if he's eating adequate of the different meals his eating regimen should not be in any threat. We get all kinds of supplements from distinctive meals.
