vonage is great, you can get virtual numbers also for folks to call you that will forward the call to you, so lets say you live in San Francisco and your friend lives in New York, you could get a virtual number for like 5 bucks a month that is local to hiim in NY so he can call you with no charge!
About the power issue..
lets think about this, who still has a phone that is not cordless that requires no power?
If your power goes off, unless you have a old phone that is corded, you will not have a phone anyway!
Plus you can always get a cheap 30 minute power back up that would allow you to make emergency phone calls if needed and or you did not have a cell phone.
I live in rural NC and I have never lost power for more than a few minutes.
P.S for lovktr - customer service is slow as hell yes, but you should have moved your payment to a CCArd then attempted to stop service, if they continued to bill call CCard company and tell them it is unauthorized and have the charges removed.

Vonage SUCKS the customer service is horrible and I had to cancel my debit card to stop the service after 2 months of calling the cancelation department and being left on hold for over 20 minutes each time.
I dont know about other Voip services, they might be alright

I don't have it because in my area number portability is not available and I don't want to change my phone number ... I would have to get a new number, which would be long distance to local callers.
I do have a friend who lives about 35 miles from me who has it (Vonage) and swears by it. No hidden costs and good service (according to him).

Voip and Skype are good internet phones. You need to sign up for an account which is free and you get free calls to many countries, but there's a limit for the month. Worth having a look see

I've seen probs with vonage when you use your computer simultaneously and try to load a large web site. Otherwise, its a pretty decent service.
Check out skype too...
Best to you...

It's great.
The only "problem" I know of is if you lose power to your house, the phone won't work either since your phone uses a modem (VoIP) and your internet connection to connect.
There is no echo or delay - and it's a lot cheaper.

If i'm about the abode then that is invariably the landline and landline charges are more cost-efficient then cellular. The cellular is for sale for emergencies even although or for once you ultimately end up not on the problem of the position of abode.
