Contact your local ORS or Office of Recovery Services, they are a great asset in collecting from dead beats. If he doesn't pay up there will be more time in the slammer. It may also be time to start looking for a means of support. Maybe a new dad. There are plenty of guys that will step up and take the responsibility of being another child's father figure if you let him. It takes a lot of trust but it would be benificial to your child to have the means to live a happy life and see mom being taken care of.

Check with the family court system in your area - there is probably a program that you and your child qualify that will pay you monthly and they will monitor the father and when he is off of SSI (not SSDI if I understand this correctly), they will have him pay them back for what they have paid, and make him pay you in the future. You should also qualify for WIC, and probably several programs under DHS in your area.

You didn't say if you were able to support her on your own, or if you have some assistance. Based on the short scenario - you and your daughter are much better off without any sort of contact, even money, from this man. It is hard to believe that our tax dollars keep him in and out of jail as well as pay him supplemental income when he isn't in jail.

You have my sympathy.

Back when Newt Gingrich made his welfare reforms they made it impossible for women who applied for the benefits unless they named who the father of the child was.

Then the government went after the father for payment, and jail time if they did not pay. The unfortunate consequence of this was a sharp increase in murders of that group of women and this even sometimes included the children.

Given the father's background, if he ever did get gainful employment it may not be worth the risk. You should just be happy to have him out of your life.

Now if he has changed, and you two could work things out, that would get around the whole problem, and the child would have her real father in her life.

You said that you are not eligible for any type of aid, you might be able to get pell grants to go to college (if you don't have a degree yet), but you might want to study up for it prior to going so you are properly prepared. The life of a collge student can be inexpensive, with family student housing and childcare sometimes provided, and cheap insurance depending on the university.
