The American Revolution occurred because of increased British presence/involvement in the colonies as well as higher taxes, after the 7 years war.
Before that war, the American Colonies enjoyed relatively little involvement from the British government and relatively low taxes. They were for the most part self-governing.
Then came the Seven Years War. The Seven Years War was a struggle between 3 major powers. The British, French, and Spanish. At the end of that war, the British came out on top, but the war had cost them alot in terms of resources and money. In order to pay for this costly war, they jacked up taxes on their colonies and had a larger police/military presence in the colonies. Most notable was the increased taxes on tea imported from Britain, which resulted in the Boston Tea Party, where the colonists protested higher taxes by tossing the tea off of the British ships into the harbor.
The American Revolution began shortly thereafter.

The American Revolution was really a culmination of many things. Its roots can be linked to the 17th century when the American colonies mostly ruled themselves. This period of time is known as the "salutary neglect" where England primarily let the colonies rule themselves and develop systems of autonomy.
Years later, in the 1760's the French & Indian War happened. The British depended on the colonists for the first time to help them militarialy and to help them financially after the war. Most colonists weren't used to such demands by the British and so resentment was born. Throughout the next fifteen or so years until the actual Revolution battles took place, the colonies developed and molded into a culture that was known as distinctly "American." These colonists now viewed themselves as Americans who were separate from this country thousands of miles away called England. On top of this American Identity, the British started imposing various acts that forced taxes onto the colonists. The culmination of all these factors resulted in the events known as the American Revolution.

The British colonies did not think it was fair for Parliament to issue taxes against them if they were not represented. It did not matter that the taxes were being issued to help pay for the war against the French that secured freedom for the British colonies.
Many taxes were levied on such things as sugar, paper goods, and of course tea. In response to the taxes, some British colonist revolted against their king's rule by organizing terrorist attacks against private businesses. The most popular of these being the "Boston Tea Party."
The king eventually tired of these select treasonous British colonists and sent troops to protect his realm from insurrection. This eventually led to armed conflict in 1775. As the British troops were going to Concord to confiscate an arms depot collected by colonial insurgents, they were fired on in the town of Lexington.
That is how the war started. It is over the fact that British subjects were not being represented in their own parliament. They took issue with Parliament over taxes levied to lessen the economic burden of the government due to the French and Indian War, fought a decade earlier.

The american revolution has gone full circle and is now entering a new revolution. I can only hope that we all gain from the superpower experience. It is my belief that the balance of power is relatively even!
Given the facts that almost all of our economically viable products are made in asia, I think we should be relieved that we have a world police force. God knows no one else can afford to do it!!
