I am a tack runner who is taking up the long jump for the first time this upcoming season. Outside of form, what are things I can do to make myself better in the meantime? Without knowing what I'm doing (lol) on a good day I can get 18 1/2 feet. I'm six two and pretty fast which is what is helping me. I can run the 100 meter in the 11's, so speed isn't as much an issue for me. I need to increase quickness, flexibility and strength- how can I do this and what are some other things I can do to help myself get better. I know how good of a jump this is, I know, but I made a bet with someone that I'd get a 21 foot jump by the end of the season. I know how good that is, but considering I can get 18 1/2 with no training at all I don't think its impossible. I want to get that jump!

I ran track in high school and also did the long jump. This is how I trained, I pounded two sticks in the pit, three feet high at the beginning of the pit and put a piece of wood across the top of the sticks. If you can jump over the stick without knocking it over you'll be clearing 20 feet. You need to work on technique, speed isn't everything in long jumping, it's your mechanics.
