metropolis is a central city. a megalopolis is the entire area central city, suburbs, and other develpoments that build up around a central city\

A megalopolis is what you get when a bunch of cities that used to be separate, all expand so far that they encroach on each other to such an extent that they become one city. It's like a conurbation, but bigger.

A metropolis is just a big city.
