that depends on the letter...a scarlet A is one thing; an account summary in red is another, and then if it's my cousin Philtrildie, she just likes bright ink.

I dont know about red, but in when we send a letter in BLACK ink to another person it means only for sorrow things.

I write in red ink about 1/4 of the time, because I buy 4-packs of Pilot gel ink pens that have black, blue, green, and red. All it means is that your penpal grabbed the first pen he saw and isn't superstitious enough to assume any foul meaning behind it.

Adding to the other reasons like availability at the time of writing, red is used to EMPHASIZE a point or they thought that the mail is important, so chose to write it in Red. I dont see any superstition like bad luck in that. I keep and use pens and sketch pens of all colors and use as per the need and mood.

It could mean all they had to write with was a red ink pen or a red ball point pen.

among other things it may mean that the writer had only a red-ink pen, or that he is treating the letter as something confidential and important.

Maybe they just like red pens or it may have been all they could find at the time. ever way i don't think it means much at all

Could mean love, could mean hate. It all depends on the contex of the letter.
Or it could just be bc they didn't have anything else to write w/.
