Sadly, YES -- they CAN come after you and sue you for the debts that were designated as his in the Divorce Decree.
The reason: Since the debts were generated during the marriage -- it is considered a JOINT DEBT -- and until it is paid off -- you are JOINTLY Liable for the balance -- so if your ex does not pay the bill -- they will go after you for the balance due.

Yes, a divorce decree does not remove you from paying any debts in your name. The divorce decree can help you by taking the ex to court for not paying the bill as outlined in the divorce decree, you might be able to get a judgement against them, or take them to small claims court.
But, even if it was detailed in the divorce decree that your ex would pay, if you are on the debt, creditors will come after you if it is not paid.

My divorce decree said my ex had to pay certain bills. He even talked to the credit card company that held my card. They got approval from me to send the statements to him so he could pay. 3 years later I had to go to small claims because the bill was NOT getting paid. It got settled out of court. He still had to pay it because he made the arrangements with the credit card people. But because I didn't follow through (I didn't know I should have at the time), my credit is shot. Make sure if your ex is required to pay the bills, if any are in YOUR name, get a credit report run every so often or keep in contact with the company to make sure it IS getting paid. If not, call your lawyer.

In our wonderful society, anyone can sue anyone for anything. Whether or not they will collect is a different story. Ask the collection agency for a written statement detailing why they are harassing you when you have furnished them written evidence of the divorce decree.
They get paid a % of anything they collect and some will try any corner and any scare they can.

They can take you to court or have you sit down with their lawyers but when the divorce decree is produced they have to stop harassing you and pursue him in all legal mater's from that point. This is the way thing's are being done now with thoughs situation's.It will be twice as harsh for the ex now that they have been negligent on two sources of legal responsiblity.
