I have a question that may seem a little stupid: do people of all cultures around the world celebrate Halloween? I was told, today, that only the US and Canada recognize it and celebrate it, and then I got to thinking of the Harry Potter series (which is set in England) and how I thought that Halloween was mentioned somewhere along the story.....can anyone help me out here?

Yes. The Halloween traditions largely came to us from Europe. And also Mexico, where they call it Day of the Dead instead of Halloween.

Halloween started as a Celtic festival called Samhain. It was thought that the spirit world and our world were brought closer together on that night, so people dressed up in costumes to frighten away evil spirits. The name Halloween is a shortened version of All Hallows' Eve, because the 1st November is All Hallows' Day (or All Saints' Day). So yes Halloween is celebrated in Ireland and Britain anyway, though I'm not sure about the rest of Europe.

Aye, can help. The US, Canada, Ireland, and England all have trick or treating, though I understand it seems to be catching on in Australia.

But Hallowe'en is celebrated all over the world in many places. It also goes by different names, like Santa Claus!
