I have seen many (mostly older) cars that have a metal tab on the door, on or next to the window seal, usually about 2/3 of the way up on the front sloping edge of the window. Sometimes one both on the outside and inside, sometimes only on the outside edge. It must be there for a reason, but what purpose is it meant to serve?

a guide for the window makes sense. I've never seen a window loose enough to actually need them, maybe there just in case. I've seen them extend nearly an inch past the rubber molding. Could the windows really get that far off track?

that tab is usually on cars that dont have a frame around the window so its keeps the window tight to the car when the window is rolled up

I have some on my accord. All they seem to be for is to keep the window in its track. All that hold the window in place for my car above the track in the door is the rubber molding. Honda windows are easy to pull away for he car and reach your hand in to unlock the door. I bent my clips to unlock my door and bent them back when I was done. They are not a necessity and you can get rid of them if you'd like

It is a guide to guide the top of the window into the seal for proper fit when the window is being rolled up.

I believe you are talking about the tab that assures the window stays aligned as it is rolled up.
