Good question. Most of your time living is actually sleeping in your bedroom so I dunno.

It used to be called a parlor. I think the name changed as soon as homes started to become mass made, to indicate that it's not a formal room just for show, it's a room that the whole family uses or "lives" in.

It is the room that people used to spend most of the family time for games, talking and later, radio and TV. People lived there.

Because it's where you spend most of your awake non-working time living. Also spend lots of time there watching other people living (on TV). Used to be called the den. Like how foxes live in a den. Its where you live.

It's the room in one's house usually associated with and set aside for family, friends, and relatives to gather together in and socialize, watch T.V., play games, and listen to music, etc.
Although our families tend to gather in the kitchen lots!

Better than a dead room, which is what it can be in some fancy houses, because its mostly to show off to guests.
